I'm not sure what it is about water, but kids seem to love a project that involves getting wet! In this project, students learned about buoyancy by designing their own boats.
They learned that boats float because their weight is equal to the pressure from the liquid beneath them. We first experimented with objects to see what would float in a small amount of water. Then we added more water to see whether or not it changed their ability to float.
I'm teaching first grade this year! I'm also leading a STEM club after school for students in grades K-2. I have about 18 students. For our first week of STEM club, the kids made ramps using various boards and toy cars.
Here were some of the concepts we covered: (I got inspiration from Little Bins for Little Hands.)
How do have kindergarteners demonstrate physics concepts? With a miniature golf course, of course! In December 2021, my kindergarteners demonstrated their understanding of push and pull forces by making a class miniature golf course.
