I created a mini-science unit on space for my first graders, inspired by Mrs. Myer's Kindergarten.

We made moon paintings, calculated our moon jumps, made constellation art, and completed a lunar space shuttle STEM challenge.

Who doesn't love bubbles?!

For this project, I created my own bubble solution and gave the kids several different methods for creating bubbles. At which point, it was up to them to create the largest bubbles they could, and the results were amazing!

STEM PROJECT: MINI BOATS

I'm not sure what it is about water, but kids seem to love a project that involves getting wet! In this project, students learned about buoyancy by designing their own boats.

They learned that boats float because their weight is equal to the pressure from the liquid beneath them. We first experimented with objects to see what would float in a small amount of water. Then we added more water to see whether or not it changed their ability to float.

I'm teaching first grade this year! I'm also leading a STEM club after school for students in grades K-2. I have about 18 students. For our first week of STEM club, the kids made ramps using various boards and toy cars.

Here were some of the concepts we covered: (I got inspiration from Little Bins for Little Hands.)
  • Newton’s Third Law of Motion: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
  • Thrust: When you release the car on the track, gravity pulls the car toward the ground down the track.
  • Until the car is released, it is at rest and you put it in motion. This is Newton’s 1st and 2nd Laws of Motion. An object at rest stays at rest until a force is added.
  • Friction: the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.

How do have kindergarteners demonstrate physics concepts? With a miniature golf course, of course!
In December 2021, my kindergarteners demonstrated their understanding of push and pull forces by making a class miniature golf course.
